Postdoctoral Research Fellow

A Postdoctoral Research Fellow position is currently available in the laboratory of Colette Dooley, Ph.D., Assistant Member, to study the molecular mechanisms of opioid tolerance and dependence. The candidate will be expected to conduct research examining the cellular mechanisms by which:

i) novel peptides induce GPCR internalization and
ii) screen mixture based combinatorial libraries in GPCR internalization assays to
iii) develop a receptor/ligand FRET assay.

The applicant is expected to have 0-2 years of previous postdoctoral experience. Experience in fluorescence microscopy is preferred and experience with radio-receptor binding assays and cell culture is advantageous.

Postdoctoral Research Fellow

A Postdoctoral Research Fellow position is currently available in the laboratory of Jay McLaughlin, Ph.D., Associate Member.

The position will both screen novel compounds derived from mixture-based combinatorial libraries for analgesic and desirable pharmacological properties and determine the neuropharmacological mechanisms underlying behavioral effects using pharmacological and transgenic animal models. Desirable applicants will possess experience with in vivo animal models. Experience with immunohistochemical methods is also desirable, but not required.

Environmental Health & Safety Officer

The Environmental Health & Safety Officer will report to the Scientific Assistant to the President and will provide technical advice and oversight to develop, implement and sustain environmental, health and safety programs that safeguard employees and other assets. The EH&S Officer serves as a resource providing leadership and advice to the Institute on all matters pertaining to a safe, healthy work environment. This position administers the Institute's environmental health and safety programs in partnership with departments throughout TPIMS.

Duties and Responsibilities

The areas for which the Environmental Health/Safety Officer will be responsible include, but are not limited to: Laboratory Safety, Bio-safety and Chemical Hazards, Communicable Disease Control, Bloodborne Pathogen Control, Ergonomics, Indoor Air Quality, Occupational Health, Hearing Conservation and Respiratory Protection, Hazardous Materials, Contingency Planning & Spill Response, Risk Mitigation Plans, Hazardous Waste Disposal, Pollution Prevention Reporting, Fire Safety, General Safety, Injury and Illness Prevention, Personal Protection Equipment, Inspections, Audits, Plan Review and Training.
  • Provide leadership to the environmental health and safety function to include: developing performance expectations, making recommendations, monitoring performance and conducting evaluations, providing training, developing goals and objectives for the department and monitoring progress with special focus on chemistry and biology labs and the Vivarium.  In addition, the Environmental Health/Safety Officer is charged with developing the best available methods and practices that affect health and safety in the work place to manage an environmentally and occupationally safe Institute.
  • Partner with the TPIMS Security/Facilities and Human Resources in support of the emergency management, occupational health, and preparedness programs.
  • Build strong partnerships with TPIMS departments in order to implement laboratory safety, accident prevention, pollution prevention, communicable disease control, hazardous chemical disposal, medical monitoring, ergonomics and occupational health programs and services.
  • Promote an environment of shared responsibility throughout TPIMS that will effectively identify hazards and support the implementation of corrective actions needed to safeguard employees and minimize losses to facilities and other assets.
  • Work with departments to inspect work places for potential hazards; investigate accidents; implement recommendations to ensure a safe and healthy work environment including but not limited to: training, changes to existing or development of new policies, procedures or work place practices and other consulting services.
  • Consult with, or assist the TPIMS Radiation Safety Officer with any issues regarding radioactive and biohazard materials.
  • Conduct policy development and review to assure adequate resources exist to interpret and enforce all environmental, health and safety concerns effectively.
  • Administer programs, policies and procedures that identify, evaluate, and eliminate environmental, health and safety hazards in a proactive manner while minimizing the potential for loss of people, capital and facilities.
  • Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations that govern environmental, health and safety areas; develop and implement policy, procedures and operating manuals; maintain records or provide guidance on the maintenance of records, licenses and permits; and represent TPIMS with governmental agencies regarding environmental health and safety.
  • Conduct research and prepare reports required by regulatory agencies and upon request of TPIMS management.
  • Assess and prioritize health and safety concerns utilizing risk assessment methodologies to determine high-risk areas and to prioritize funding requirements.
  • Utilize accident data, training records and building inspections to conduct a risk based analysis to focus activities as needed.
  • Research current codes, benchmark other labs and assess upcoming code changes to assure timely application.
  • Utilize Construction Design Standards to assure typical compliance to code requirements or specifics typically applied by the State Fire Marshal.
  • Provide fiscal analysis for expenditures such as hazardous waste disposal, training, and support programs to justify additional activities.
  • Serve as the TPIMS Florida IACUC representative overseeing all health and safety aspects associated with operation of the Florida Vivarium.
  • In conjunction with Human Resources, provide safety training for all new personnel as part of the orientation process and an annual seminar for all staff.
  • Serve as the primary TPIMS representative for all site inspections (planned or unplanned).
  • Travel to other TPIMS sites, review plans and offer assistance and consulting services, as necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Environmental Health or Safety, Environmental or Industrial Engineering or some other closely related discipline required.
  • Master's Degree in Chemistry, Environmental Health or Safety or Environmental or Industrial Engineering or similar degree preferred.
  • Ability to present effective oral and written communication with both internal and external contacts and customers.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).
  • Working knowledge of applicable safety and environmental health laws and regulations as imposed by OSHA, EPA and other agencies and skill in performing inspections and ensuring compliance with same.
  • Experience working in research lab setting or complex, multi-site operation.
  • Ability to communicate in English including the ability to speak in public.
  • Ability to research, write and prepare reports and program evaluations as necessary.
  • Ability to develop, implement, enforce, and evaluate safety and environmental health programs and protocols.
  • Ability to develop and implement training programs, procedures and documentation of same to meet regulatory agency requirements for faculty and staff.
  • Working knowledge of Life Safety codes and best practices.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment and work proactively with faculty, staff, administrative officers, representatives of local community and with representatives of governmental agencies as required. 
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to develop a well balanced Environmental Health & Safety Program.

Experience

  • 5+ years of prior hands-on experience in the area of environmental health and safety administration is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a safety program impacting multiple units such as an institutional-wide program. 
  • Demonstrated ability in establishing and implementing health and safety training programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage diverse technical personnel.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze a complex research lab operation and establish priorities based on hazard and risk assessments in both chemistry and biology.

Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies (TPIMS) is currently seeking Principal Investigators (Faculty) to join the Institute's new research operation in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

TPIMS is one of several bio-medical research organizations that have established operations as part of the growing biotechnology cluster in the Sunshine State and is now operating in a state-of-the-art 107,000 square foot building in the Florida Center for Innovation at Tradition.  Port St. Lucie is a beautiful community on the east coast of Florida in St. Lucie County, about 40 miles north of West Palm Beach.

Lab Assistant

Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies is seeking a part-time Lab Assistant who will be responsible for activities involving routine laboratory maintenance, glassware washing, and organizing of materials and supplies. General laboratory duties will be performed to assist other lab staff in preparing for and conducting experiments. The laboratory research is in the field of direct drug discovery.

The successful candidate must be self-motivated, organized, and a team player who is committed, responsible, and able to follow through on instructions.

General laboratory experience is preferred.
